Eligibility
The bursary will be awarded to learners registered in the Doctor of Medicine program or any PGY level of postgraduate medical training (preference will be given to transition years), who demonstrate unanticipated financial need as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic and who meet the criteria.
Criteria
Standard faculty requirements, such as satisfactory academic standing, Canadian citizenship, permanent resident, MOH funded, etc; Financial need, as per faculty requirements.
Eligible Expenses
Housing/Accommodations – A Learner who requires housing/accommodation for the purposes of self-isolation or quarantine (i.e. living with vulnerable population or due to exposure of COVID-19). A Learner who experienced unanticipated housing costs due to the delay in their exam (i.e. overlap of rent in two places).
Childcare – Childcare expenses accumulated due to COVID-19.
Transportation – Learners who incur unanticipated transportation costs or Learners who feel that their risk (to exposure) is too great by using public transportation (i.e. rental car, etc.).
Utilities – Increased educational costs such as access to the internet, increased data plan, etc.
Wellness – Mental Health services (i.e. counselling, wellness programming, fatigue risk management, burnout, fitness app, mental health wellness app, etc.).
Other – Reusable PPE when explicitly necessary (i.e. will be circumstance based). Other new unanticipated needs directly related to COVID-19.
The Bursary is not designed to provide relief for the following ineligible expenses:
- Directly replacing lost income (learners requesting direct income loss support should apply for government assistance, as applicable)
- Missed loan payments (or payments in arrears)
- Discretionary expenses
- Other non-essential personal expenses unrelated to COVID-19
