Supports Available Through McMaster University

Resident Affairs Office

Mission is ensure the success of the Residents and Fellows by promoting wellness and resilience and by helping address issues of concern in their professional and person lives. Provides confidential support for all learners and assists in managing issues with or within their program, hospital, university or home.  RA will act as the learner advocate and  will assist or represent the learner requiring work place accommodations.  RA will act as a confidential coach functioning at arm’s length to the PGME office, Program Directors, and hospital administration. Provides Individual support,  group support and consultation.  Support is available at all campuses. RA functions

  • Protecting resident physical and psychological health and safety, including protection, guidance and support for the resident when mistreatment is reported
  • Helping residents to address issues of concern in their professional and personal lives and supporting those who are experiencing distress or difficulty
  • Assisting residents with health, mental health, sensory or learning disabilities to navigate academic/workplace accommodations when needed
  • Promoting awareness of and action on issues influencing resident well-being, health, mental health, burnout and resilience through education, activities and communications
  • Promoting and fostering positive working and learning environments for residents

Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office

Response and support; information on reporting options and complaint intake if appropriate.  Information and guidance r on the policy, procedures, programs, and referral to campus and community services and resources.

Family Physician Referral – PGME recognizes that it is important that all learners have a local family physician and has a confidential list of family physicians who are willing to accept trainees and their partners/families as patients.

Supports Available through Professional Organizations/Associations

Ontario Medical Association Physician Health Program – The Wellness Support Line provides immediate, urgent crisis support, as well as help with everyday wellness issues. Provides confidential advice, preliminary assessment, intervention coordination, and referral for counselling and clinical services to trainees and their family members. They will assist with issues such as stress, burnout, marital and family issues, substance abuse or dependency, conduct or behavioural problems, sexual boundary issues, gambling, and mental health. Confidential helpline (M-F 8:45am-5:00pm): 1-800-851-6606.

Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (PARO) is the official representative voice for Ontario’s doctors in training, with the mandate of advocating on behalf of its members and optimizing the training and working experience of trainees. 24/7 confidential helpline: 1-866-HELP-DOC (1-866-435-7362) for emergency or urgent matters, as well as for referral to resources on a variety of issues.

Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) provides information and resources regarding medico-legal concerns.

Resident Doctors of Canada (RDoC) is a not-for-profit organization representing over 10,000 resident doctors across Canada and providing a unified, national voice for its members.

  • Supports Available in the Community – Residents are made aware of all local community resources (hospitals, crisis centers, police stations etc.) on Medportal.
  • Medportal provides information on various wellness domains with links and resources to information, self assessment and education.
