National Day for Truth & Reconciliation
“On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on our ancestors who have been lost to cultural genocide and continue to be with us. We call on the McMaster community to meaningfully reflect on the systems of colonial oppression that have undermined and continue to undermine Indigenous people’s lives. Further, we encourage everyone to reflect on the harms that have come to Indigenous patients in the Canadian health care system – to those such as Joyce Echaquan, Brian Sinclair and Jordan River-Anderson – and consider how current systems would still allow these harms to reoccur. Only 13/94 of the TRC’s Call to Action have been completed since their inception in 2015 and we call on the McMaster community to stand with us in solidarity and allyship to hold Western systems accountable for the lack of meaningful action to support our self-determination.”
